Title: Sony Alpha A5100 24.3MP Interchangeable Lens Camera with 16-50 Lens - White

Overall Rating

A well-performing camera with some budding photographer friendly digital filters, but it does have just a few small let-downs. A wide range of digital filters and a tilting touch screen help you get the photo you want before sending it via WiFi to your smartphone or tablet. The lack of a viewfinder could make this camera less appealing to more advanced photographers and it can feel a little unbalanced when handled with one hand. It also feels like the touchscreen is slightly underutilized, it only allows you to refocus the auto-focus and trigger the shutter.

Build Quaility

The A5100 is one of the smallest CSC on the market, and for this reduced size, and weight, it has lost the traditional dial on the top of the camera and a traditional view finder. However, despite it's compact and light weight body it still feels well made and not fragile in any way. The removed buttons features can be found by navigating the well laid out menu, that unfortunately cannot be navigated by the touch screen. That said, in traditional Sony fashion, the function of the shortcut buttons on the dial can be customised to give you access to the functions you use most, and with one-handed shooting in mind the buttons that are still here are all found on the right hand-side of the camera for ease of access. The tilting screen too feels solid on its track and can be rotated through 180 degrees for shooting selfies. All together the Sony A5100 is a well thought out and well made piece of kit in most respects.

Value For Money

When compared with other cameras in its class the A5100 stacks up very well. It has been widely received as a great entry level interchangeable lens camera in the CSC market and costs less than most other cameras on the market. Overall it seems that the A5100 is good value for money.

Style

With that thin light body and proportionally much larger looking lens from the front and most of the body being consumed by the 3 inch screen this camera is all about the big picture. The minimalist approach of the button grouping on the back also gives this camera the look of a travel friendly point and shoot while offering much more. Available in more colours than just black, it also lets you stand out as much as you want to.
